INTRODUCTION
I first read about the ABCDE (Anabolic Burst Cycling of Diet and Exercise) diet in Bill Phillips Sports Supplement Review 3rd Issue. In the article he interviews a colleague named Torbjorn Akerfeldt a scientist who was, at the time, studying medicine at Uppsala University, which is located 50 miles outside of Stockholm, Sweden. In addition to having an extensive background in sciences such as endocrinology, physiology, pharmacology, and nutrition, Torbjorn is also a pretty a bodybuilder himself.
The diet follows a principal that over feeding causes lean muscle growth as well as an increase in body fat. The increase in lean muscle reaches a peak at after 2 week period. Continuing to over feed after 2 weeks would result in a much greater body fat increase and a leveling off of the lean tissue increase. Therefore, after 2 weeks you stop over feeding.
The diet then goes onto another 2 week period of dieting, where you consume less than your maintenance requirement. The aim here is to burn off the xtra fat gained during the 1st 2 week period. Why 2 weeks only on a low calorie phase? The body appears to adapt to the lo calies and becomes more eficient at storing fat, and so your rate of fat loss slows down. Also, a low calorie diet that extends beyond these 2 weeks would lead to an increased rate of muscle loss.
So it appears the peak period is 2 weeks to get the full benefit. 2 weeks bulking, 2 weeks cutting.
What I have begun here is a simple version of the diet that you can start to follow straight away. Using WinOrganizer, gives you a great way to follow the diet and tailor it to your own needs.
I had tried working out a version of this diet in a variety of other applications - word processors, spreadsheets and calendars, but none of them gave me the control, power and "have it all in one place" that WinOrganizer offers. This application allows you to keep all of the details of your diet in one place, in an easily readable format - and best of all it tells you when you need to eat!
